The Southwest Virginia Young Democrats are moving forward with a plan to host a gubernatorial debate in Abingdon. Two of the three current Democratic candidates for governor, Brian Moran and Terry MacAuliffe, have indicated their willingness to attend a debate tentatively set for 7 p.m. Saturday, April 25 at Abingdon High School. Creigh Deeds’ campaign has indicated that they will have to wait until after the current legislative session is completed before they can look at the possibility of a debate.
The SWVA Young Democrats are inviting each of the 9th Congressional District Democratic Committees, as well as local Young Democrat chapters, to submit up to 5 potential questions to be asked at the debate. The questions will be compiled during a SWVA YD meeting the end of February.
Scott County Democratic Committee chair Dennis Gillenwater says the debate is an important facet of the election in Southwest Virginia. “All the candidates ask for our support, want us to get out and work for them,” says Gillenwater. “We need to know, what are they going to put back into our region? How are they going to work for us?”
People wanting to know more about the debate should contact their local Virginia Young Democrat chapter for more information. <www.vayd.org>

Despite the claims being made by Republicans (including members of our families) that it is impossible to be a both Christian and a Democrat, the truth of the matter is that the majority of the practicing Scott County Democrats are also practicing Christians.
That being the case, we would like to take this time to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and offer our prayers for the upcoming New Year.
May God stand with us in the year ahead, may He help us not to judge others, may He engender in each of us a readiness to help those in need, and a sense of service to our community, our country, and each of those we come in contact with every day.
Merry Christmas!
Hey guys,
I know everyone is probably with their families and friends
celebrating the holidays, but I wanted to take a second and wish
everyone a Merry Christmas from the officers of the Young Dems. Stay
safe during the holiday season!
Also, the group will have a Conference Call on Sunday, January 11th at
6:00pm to discuss upcoming events and ideas for the new year.
Conference call details will be sent via email in the coming days.
One reason for the change in the conference call time is because
Creigh Deeds has decided to come to Bristol, VA this Sunday, December
28th. He’ll be speaking at Ryan’s Steakhouse at 6:30pm if you would
like to attend.
Happy Holidays,
Justin Fleenor
Vice President
Southwest Virginia Young Democrats
